Classical fountains

Classical form. Gardens for today.

Classical and Mediterranean fountain traditions find a place in the garden of today. Bowls, columns, spouts, reliefs and patina shape more than appearance: they establish scale, draw the eye and help a fountain feel at home in its setting.

Design language

What makes a classical fountain?

A classical fountain takes its character from the tradition behind its design, rather than from its age.

The classical fountains in this collection are newly made garden fountains. Their classical or Mediterranean character comes from proportion and silhouette, bowls, columns, spouts and reliefs, and the treatment of the surface. They need not date from a historic period.

Several models are deliberately made with an aged finish. Small scuffs are intentional manufacturing details on the French Le Rove and Central antique-style fountains, the Saint-Tropez village fountain and the Lorent natural stone village fountain. The Marbella product description similarly specifies small surface cracks and scuffs. These are documented features of how each model is made; they do not indicate historic age.

The category also spans several structures: freestanding central fountains, tiered fountains, basin fountains and wall fountains. It therefore overlaps with other ways of exploring the collection.

Newly made
A reference to a design tradition rather than a date. A fountain with a classical appearance can be a current model in this collection.
Antique-inspired
Intentional surface marks are part of the manufacturing process on the models listed above. They describe the desired appearance, rather than provenance or age.
Overlapping categories
A classical fountain may also be a wall fountain, a natural stone fountain or a terrace fountain. These categories describe different aspects of the same model.

Proportion

The elements of a classical fountain.

Four elements shape its presence: how it stands, how it holds water, how the water moves and how the surface catches the light. The elevation drawing is schematic; the principles refer to documented models.

A B C D

01 / A The axis

A classical fountain is usually centred and arranged vertically: base, basin, column, bowl and finial. This sequence from base to crown can mark the end of a view or establish a new sightline. Fontana Frosinone brings its central bowl into a composition with an overall height of 154 cm.

02 / B The bowl

The bowl gathers water and gives the fountain width. A single bowl feels calm and focused; several tiers lead the eye upwards. The relationship between diameter and height matters: Monterosso is only 105 cm high, yet its 265 cm basin creates a horizontal presence that a taller model may never achieve.

03 / C Water in motion

Water movement is part of the silhouette. A central jet draws a vertical line; in tiered fountains such as Gijon and Marbella, water falls from bowl to bowl. In Le Rove, Central and Saint-Tropez, spouts on the central column feed the basin. A wall fountain brings the water through a vertical backdrop. There is no single water system shared by all classical fountains.

04 / D The surface

Surface treatment determines how closely a fountain evokes its inspiration. The Italian Fontana models offer seven stone colours, from Natural White to Old London Gloss. The handmade French limestone models come in Estallades, Avion and Avion Patina, with a deliberately timeworn character. Gijon and Marbella offer three patina combinations.

Origins & craftsmanship

Three traditions. Three ways to shape a place.

The catalogue brings together three traditions of design and manufacture. Some motifs overlap, while materials, construction and surface treatments remain distinct.

01 — Italian forms

A central axis, a generous basin, cast stone

The Italian collection uses traditional stone casting, with a blend described as Carrara marble powder and cement. It produces upright villa-style silhouettes such as Frosinone and exceptionally wide basin fountains such as Monterosso, alongside the much larger Milano and Linda.

02 — French antique inspiration

Limestone, handcraft and spouts

The handmade French limestone models draw on village and courtyard fountains: octagonal or round basins, a worked central column and antique-style spouts. Le Rove, Central, Saint-Tropez and Lorent are newly made pieces with an aged character, rather than reclaimed historic originals. Small scuffs are deliberately added during manufacture.

03 — Spanish and Mediterranean silhouettes

Tiers, patina and a choice of heights

The Mediterranean collection builds its silhouettes in tiers. Water travels from bowl to bowl, becoming part of the form itself. The collection describes a stone blend of sand or stone powder, fresh water, cement and binders from the Levante region. Surfaces are deliberately aged, and the models come in a choice of sizes.

Fountain types

A shared style. Different structures.

Four basic forms create four different spatial relationships. The design language may stay the same, while diameter, circulation space and viewing angles change.

01

Freestanding central fountain

A basin with a central column can be viewed from every side, so it needs space around it as well as in front. Four spouts feed the basins of Le Rove and Central, while the column concentrates the vertical line. Allow room for people to move around the fountain: Central, with its 350 cm diameter, needs more space than its footprint alone.

Central: approx. 255 cm high · ⌀ 350 cm · four spouts

02

Tiered fountain

A sequence of bowls reveals the path of the water as it falls from tier to tier and becomes part of the silhouette. Even at a moderate height, a tiered fountain feels upright and rewards a closer view. Gijon ranges from 113 to 190 cm: one form with four different vertical presences.

Gijon: 113 / 140 / 165 / 190 cm · seven components · approx. 91–315 kg

03

Wide basin fountain

When diameter exceeds height, the horizontal line defines the fountain. At 105 cm, Monterosso remains below eye level, yet its 265 cm diameter commands the space. Milano takes this further: an outside diameter of 420/400 cm, an internal diameter of 300 cm and 30 components create a basin that feels part of the landscape.

04

Village and courtyard fountain

An octagonal basin with a worked central column recalls a French village square. Each of its eight sides offers a view. The size of Lorent changes its relationship to a courtyard: Model 1 has a 200 × 200 cm footprint, while Model 2, at 250 × 250 cm and 220 cm high, takes a stronger role in organising the space. Delivery also changes from two non-returnable pallets to four.

Material & patina

Material brings a style to life.

Three material systems underpin these traditions. Each produces a different surface and a different connection to the fountain’s design inspiration.

Italian classical fountain colour samples: Natural White, Antique White, Natural White Gloss, Antique White Gloss, Tufo Gloss, Terracotta Gloss and Old London Gloss

Cast stone and colour

The Italian Fontana models use traditional stone casting. The collection describes a blend based on Carrara marble powder and cement. Seven stone colours give it very different expressions, from Natural White through Tufo Gloss to Old London Gloss.

Seven colours: Natural White, Antique White, Natural White Gloss, Antique White Gloss, Tufo Gloss, Terracotta Gloss and Old London Gloss. Colour determines whether a fountain blends into its setting or stands apart; the choice of setting still matters.

Hand-worked French limestone

Le Rove, Central, Saint-Tropez and Lorent are made by hand from French limestone. Columns, profiles and antique-style spouts are worked into the stone. Choose from Estallades, Avion and Avion Patina. Manufacturers explicitly describe small scuffs as intentional details added during production.

Three limestone options: Estallades, Avion and Avion Patina. The nostalgic appearance is a feature of a newly made fountain, rather than evidence of historic age.

Spanish fountain stone samples in Black/White, Brown/White and Ochre/White patina combinations

Stone blend and patina

For the Mediterranean collection, the specified blend uses sand or stone powder, fresh water, cement and binders from the Levante region. Gijon and Marbella come in three patina combinations. Marbella’s product description specifies small cracks and scuffs intentionally worked into the surface.

Three patina combinations: Black/White, Brown/White and Ochre/White. An aged appearance is an intended finish on these models.

Fontana Linda fountain

Fontana Linda fountain

Italian form · Cast stone

Overall height275 cm
Bowl ⌀ (specified)150 cm

Setting

The right style starts with the right setting.

A classical fountain can belong in a garden of any age. What it needs is a setting where its geometry makes sense: an enclosure, an axis, an edge or an open area that its form can organise.

01 — Courts & courtyards

Enclosed space, several viewpoints

In a courtyard, the fountain sits between surrounding façades and is seen from several directions. Central models such as Le Rove and Central work well because they can be appreciated from every side. The distance from the walls determines whether the basin feels like a centrepiece or an obstacle.

02 — Terrace

Footprint, circulation and the sound of water

Every centimetre of circulation space matters on a terrace, where a fountain shares room with seating and paths. Compact models such as Marbella (115 cm high, 105 cm bowl) or Linda (150 cm bowl) can sit at a corner or edge without obstructing use. The sound of water depends on the nozzle or spout, flow rate and wind exposure, rather than the style.

Fontana Linda fountain with a generous bowl on a terrace

03 — Sightlines & open ground

A focal point that establishes an axis

On open ground, the fountain creates a focal point where courtyard architecture would otherwise provide one. Large models such as Milano (outside ⌀ 420/400 cm) or the largest Saint-Tropez (⌀ 300 cm, or 380 cm with base slabs) have the presence to hold their own in a broad setting. Smaller models can feel lost in the same space.

04 — Entrance & forecourt

An octagonal centre along the approach

At an entrance, a fountain is experienced on the move and needs to work from several directions. Lorent’s octagonal basin and worked column suit this role. Its two sizes also have different logistical requirements: a 200 × 200 cm footprint and two non-returnable pallets, or 250 × 250 cm and four pallets. Establish access, foundations and circulation space before choosing.

Planning

What to consider before choosing a classical fountain.

Six points to work through in order. All three traditions raise the same questions; the answers depend on the model.

Footprint & load capacity

The Spanish product specifications explicitly call for a level, stable surface with sufficient load capacity. Check the complete footprint, including the basin rim and any base slabs, rather than the bowl diameter alone.

  • Follow the minimum installation requirements in the product specifications
  • Allow for the weight and component count of the chosen model: Gijon ranges from approx. 91 to 315 kg
  • Lorent includes a foundation plan

Access & assembly

The delivery route matters as much as the final position. The large French models have specified delivery volumes: Lorent uses two non-returnable pallets for Model 1 and four for Model 2, Central uses 4–5, and Saint-Tropez uses 2–7 depending on size.

  • Check delivery access, gateways and turning space before ordering
  • Plan lifting equipment and professional assembly for large models
  • Keep access available for maintenance after installation

Water system

Water arrangements vary by model. Many freestanding and tiered fountains include a pump for recirculating water, while selected French antique-style and wall fountains are specified for direct connection to a water supply. Confirm the connection type, drainage and intended use for the particular model before planning.

  • Frosinone, Monterosso, Milano and Linda: pump equipment with complete pipework or hoses included
  • Gijon and Marbella: adjustable branded pump included
  • Le Rove, Central and Saint-Tropez: supplied as standard for direct connection to a water supply

Power & lighting

Pumps and lighting require an electrical supply. The Spanish models specify a site supply of 220–240 V / 50 Hz. Lighting is an option on selected Italian models; check availability for the fountain you choose.

Winter & care

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for winter use and care of the specific model. General instructions cannot cover every fountain here. Distinguish later damage from intentional manufacturing details: scuffs on the French limestone models, and cracks and scuffs on Marbella, are deliberately created surface features.

Proportion & splash zone

Diameter and water movement determine how much space remains usable around the fountain. Water sound and splash distance depend on flow rate, nozzle or spout and wind exposure. With basins measuring 265 cm (Monterosso) or 350 cm (Central), plan the surrounding usable space as carefully as the fountain itself.

Plan with qualified professionals

This page cannot replace structural, electrical or plumbing design. Electrical connections, water supply and drainage, foundations and the assembly of heavy components should be handled by qualified contractors, particularly for large installations and models connected directly to a water supply.
