Bubbling Rock Fountains

Water begins within the stone.

A bubbling rock fountain conceals its pump and reservoir, leaving the stone and water in view. Water emerges from the drilled stone, flows across its surface and returns to a closed circuit. Shape, texture and scale determine whether it gently bubbles, spreads in a sheet or forms a small cascade.

The fountain principle

What is a bubbling rock fountain?

Its defining feature is where the water emerges: from inside the stone.

A Revisage bubbling rock fountain is a designed water feature with a closed circuit. Water travels upwards through the drilled natural stone, emerges at the top and follows the rock’s natural contours back down.

What is included in a natural stone fountain set? The set includes the complete installation system: a drilled natural stone, an underground reservoir with a load-bearing GRP or metal-grate cover, matching decorative gravel, an adjustable branded pump with a 10 m power cable and optional lighting at the water outlet.
01

Drilled bore & supply hose

The pump sends water up through a vertical bore in the stone, usually 32 mm in diameter or 50 mm for large monoliths. The circuit is self-contained, with no connection to natural groundwater.

02

Surface texture & water flow

At the outlet, a film of water spreads over the rock. Small fissures, quartz veins and hollows guide its path. The pump sets the flow rate; the stone shapes the pattern.

03

Water return & filtration

At the base, water passes through the decorative gravel and load-bearing grate back into the reservoir. The gravel catches suspended debris, while the enclosed tank keeps the water cool.

Construction · Cross-section

A visible source. Concealed equipment.

The cross-section shows how a typical in-ground fountain is assembled. Above ground, only the stone and decorative gravel remain visible. The reservoir, pump and supply connections sit below ground level.

Stone shapes & water paths

One outlet. Four paths across the stone.

The shape of the rock determines the water’s path. Upright columns, broad boulders, terraced ledges and stacked slabs each create a different appearance and sound.

Vertical presence

Upright fountain stone

Upright monoliths and pointed columns form vertical landmarks in the garden. Water emerges at the top and divides into parallel rivulets along steep ridges. The stone’s height determines its presence in the surrounding space.

You receive a piece of equivalent quality from the same quarry, or a stone selected in advance from actual photographs following a personal consultation with Revisage.

Surface texture & water flow

The stone traces the path of the water.

Ridges divide the flow, steps form pools and edges create drops. The stone’s surface, from fine crystals to rough cleaved faces, determines how the water moves.

How water moves over natural stone

  1. Smooth flow at the outlet: Water first rises over the drilled opening with little pulsation.
  2. Branching at rock ridges: Natural variations in hardness channel the flow into narrow, reflective ribbons.
  3. Breakaway & droplet formation: At the lower edge, the water film gently detaches and drips quietly into the gravel bed.

Geology & colour when wet

Water brings the stone’s pattern to life.

Four stone families from the Revisage collection, compared when wet. Water intensifies their appearance: dry, matt surfaces reveal deeper colours beneath a film of water.

01 · Marble

Light, dark, layered

Marble combines dense calcite crystals with natural veining. Under a steady film of water, violet, graphite and amber tones gain visual depth.

  • Purple Wave: Crystalline violet patterning
  • Black Angel: Deep anthracite with calcite veins
  • Wachauer marble: Warm, earthy grey tones
  • Crystal Onyx: Translucent texture
02 · Quartzite

Green tones alongside marble

Sourced from Scandinavian deposits, Lappland Green offers a cool, emerald- and moss-green counterpoint to classic marble varieties. Extremely resistant to weathering.

03 · Gneiss

Layered structure

Woodstone gneiss has strong horizontal banding and warm earthy tones reminiscent of wood. In the cascade design, the slabs are carefully stacked into a stepped structure.

04 · Geometry

Granite & Slate

The Quad designer fountain gives the bubbling stone principle a precise geometric form. Mustang slate, Azul Macaubas or Blue Pearl granite frame a calm, reflective water surface.

Natural stone and related fountain designs: This overview describes how the verified Revisage fountain stones look under flowing water. For more detailed information about the materials, see our guide to Natural stone garden fountains. Sphere fountains share the same principle: the Lappland Green sphere fountain set uses the same pumping system but is defined primarily by its rotating sphere.

Scale & Dimension

Height is only half the story.

Three measurements matter when planning a garden water feature: visible stone height, reservoir diameter and weight. A low terraced stone can need more ground space than a tall marble column.

Installation & Integration

In a garden bed, the tank disappears. On a patio, the basin becomes part of the design.

Standard design · Natural stone fountain set

Tank installed in the ground

The standard system for natural stone fountain sets. The reservoir rim sits flush with ground level. A heavy-duty grate supports the stone and decorative gravel, concealing the pump and connections below ground.

  • Standard installation depth: 35 cm; diameters available: 55, 66, 90, 125, or 150 cm (depending on the model)
  • Load-bearing GRP or steel-grate cover
  • Integrated access hatch for easy maintenance
  • Ideal for perennial borders, planted beds, and gravel areas

Alternative design · Quad designer fountain

Visible natural stone basin

The Quad designer fountain can also be configured with a freestanding solid natural stone basin. This visible reservoir forms a base that sits naturally within patio paving.

  • Basin dimensions: 70×70, 100×100 or 120×120 cm, with a height of 25 cm
  • No excavation required; installs directly onto paving or a wooden deck
  • Cover with access hatch; outlet lighting included as standard
  • The basin version is also suitable as a patio fountain

The systems are not interchangeable: a standard natural stone fountain set with an in-ground tank cannot simply be converted to a freestanding basin. Check the requirements of the specific product before planning the installation.

Garden planning & setting

Choose a stone that suits its surroundings.

01 / 04

Planting beds & perennials

Boulders sit naturally among grasses, ferns and flowering perennials. Leave space around the planting to keep fallen leaves away from the access hatch.

Recommendation Wachauer marble boulder, Lappland Green boulder. Grounded and understated.
02 / 04

Structured gravel area

The fountain’s decorative gravel can flow into a wider gravel area. The border catches splashes and creates a clear edge for maintenance.

Recommendation All sets — match Carrara, onyx or river gravel to the stone.
03 / 04

Courtyard & entrance axis

Upright monoliths mark paths and entrances as sculptural landmarks. They need a level base and enough distance from walkways to limit wind-blown spray.

Recommendation Purple Wave, Black Angel (65–115 cm). Optional outlet lighting for the evening.
04 / 04

Patio edge

Near a seating area, the sound of water becomes part of the setting. For paved surfaces, choose the Quad with a visible basin; in-ground tanks belong in a planting bed.

Recommendation Quad designer fountain (basin version). Ensure sufficient space for movement all around.

Professional planning & construction

Points to clarify before installation.

Eight practical points for a lasting installation and protection against frost. Consult a specialist for difficult ground conditions or complex landscaping.

01 · LOAD-BEARING CAPACITY

Location & ground conditions

A complete natural stone fountain set often weighs 150–600 kg, including the stone, water and decorative gravel. A compacted, stable bed of gravel or sand is essential.

02 · EXCAVATION

Basin Dimensions

The excavation size depends on the diameter of the specific reservoir (Ø 55, 66, 90, 125, or 150 cm). Revisage reservoirs have a standard installation depth of 35 cm; the rim of the reservoir sits flush with the surrounding ground level.

03 · STABILITY

Levelling & securing the stone

Natural stones have irregular contact surfaces. Ensure the stone is positioned securely on the support grid so that it cannot tip over; for tall, slender columns, mechanical anchoring is recommended.

04 · POWER SUPPLY

Pump & Outdoor Power

The supplied submersible pump has a 10 m earthed power cable. It requires a weatherproof outdoor socket protected by a residual-current device (RCD). Route the power cable separately from the water hose through the access hatch.

05 · HYDRODYNAMICS

Water Pattern & Splash Zone

The water flow can be precisely adjusted using the throttle valve. Plan for a border of decorative gravel at least 30–50 cm wide around the rock to reliably catch any water splashed by the wind.

06 · LIGHTING ACCENTS

Fountain Lighting

Optional LED rings in warm white, blue or RGB colour change illuminate the water at the drilled outlet. Lighting is included as standard on the Quad designer fountain.

07 · MAINTENANCE & FROST

Water Level & Winter Care

Even with a closed-loop system, water evaporates on hot days; the level in the reservoir should be checked regularly. Before the first frost, the system must be drained, and the pump should be stored in a bucket of water in a frost-free location.

08 · UNIQUE MATERIAL

Natural Variation

Natural stone forms over time within the earth. Variations in crystal structure, veining and edges are part of its character.
