Waterfall or cascade?

The distinction lies less in the material than in the way the water is directed.

01 — Waterfall

The edge becomes the source.

In an architectural waterfall, water leaves a defined edge, spillway or curved form before falling into a basin or lower catchment. The construction and flow rate determine whether it forms a continuous curtain, a controlled arc or a lively free fall.

02 — Cascade

The fall becomes a sequence.

A cascade turns moving water into a deliberate sequence or repetition. Multiple outlets, staggered bowls, intermediate levels or articulated natural stone can create that rhythm; a cascading water feature does not have to resemble a conventional water stair.

01 — Free fall

A moment in open space.

Water separates from a defined edge and travels towards the basin as a continuous sheet, a guided arc or an open fall. Drop height and flow rate shape its movement, impact and sound.

02 — Vertical cascade

Multiple outlets, one rhythm.

Multiple outlets divide the water into recurring streams. The result is an ordered architectural water feature in which light, movement and sound are distributed across several falling points.

03 — Tiered / textured cascade

The fall happens more than once.

Water flows across bowls, intermediate levels or textured stone forms. It gathers, then begins moving again at the next edge, creating a spatially layered and sculptural cascade.

Planning outdoor waterfalls and cascades

Four planning questions determine whether an architectural water feature will perform as intended in its chosen setting.

Water circuit & pump

Many water features run in a closed circuit: water collects in a basin or reservoir and is pumped back to the outlet. The pump must match both the construction and desired flow, and outdoor installations require a suitable electrical connection.

Drop height & flow rate

Drop height changes the speed, sound and impact of the water. Required flow depends on outlet width, the number of outlets and the intended form of the fall.

Basin, wind & splash

The catchment must suit the water pattern and provide enough volume for a stable circuit. Outdoors, wind affects the fall, so distances from seating, façades and sensitive surfaces should be planned accordingly.

Power, lighting & care

Lighting can accent edges, streams and impact points; availability and specification vary by model. Regular checks of water level, pump and outlets maintain an even flow. Follow the model-specific guidance for winter care.

Colour as part of the architecture

Colour does not change the water.
It changes the space around it.

A powder-coated waterfall can echo the lines and tones of a building or introduce a deliberate counterpoint. Dark surfaces heighten the presence of moving water, while coordinated colours connect the waterfall with the façade, window frames and landscape design.
